Test and method
Corsair Force MP510 960GB NVMe M.2 SSD Review: To make our tests as complete and accurate as possible, we have designed a test method that will provide us with the maximum amount of data. While this means that each unit will take a long time to test - easily up to 36 hours - the overall picture we can collect is broad too. This helps you, as a reviewer, get a clear view of the reader's overall performance, strengths and weaknesses, and their drive. This provides a more accurate analysis of how each unit performs under different conditions.
Data filling
There are many ways to test storage drives and we have chosen to include all possible tests. We will start with a specific baseline analysis of units formatted with different village scenarios. However, performance can vary depending on how a drive is built, depending on how much data it is already storing. When testing this, the drive will be tested with empty space usage as well as 25%, 50% and 75% space. For these tests, we will use the Anvil storage utilities, AS SSD Benchmark, ATTO Benchmark, and CrystalDiskmar.
Apps and games
In addition to these synthetic fill tests, drives are tested against the PCMark 8 storage benchmark to achieve real-world performance results.
Single disk performance
After the fill tests, the partition is removed and we check the raw performance of the drive. These test kits will determine the capabilities of the hardware, eliminating any file system interference. The AIDA64 storage benchmark and the IOmeter are great tools for this, helping us paint an even clearer picture of the drive. The IOmeter tests that I run differ significantly from the rest because they will give the final result after a longer performance test rather than a maximum or average score; This gives us another view of the units tested in regular tests.
Unit conditioning
Stability is an important factor when it comes to NAND-based drives because chips can only be rewritten until they stop working properly. Modern SSDs come with wear level algorithms to increase the standard of living and reduce this factor as much as possible. We take this into consideration in our reviews, even in real world situations it will take years to emulate.
Fortunately, Enville's storage utilities come with a stress test that can perform this action very quickly, but it is still a time-consuming process. Depending on the hardware, it can easily take several days, and we write thousands upon thousands of small files in different sizes and compression capabilities to handle more and more.
After this conditioning process, all previous benchmarks will be run again in the same scenario and in the same order. This will give us an excellent overview of how the drive will perform after extended use, and this is a very important factor when removing your storage drive.
Preparation and in between
The drive will be formatted as NTFS with the default settings, just like most users. The fast format option that affects performance cannot be used when data is first written. All modern operating systems handle TRIM commands in the background and are not a concern for regular users.
However, for these reviews, I will add a waiting period between each benchmark to ensure the TRIM command runs and completes completely. Ultimately, we want a clear picture of drive performance with minimal operating system interference.
On each page that comes after the benchmarking results, I inserted the screenshot of the benchmarking result, created a unit analysis graph for fill level performance, and added a unit graph where possible.
